Sassuolo v Inter Predictions and Preview
Inter’s 2-2 draw against Atalanta in the last round has arguably been the game of the Serie A season so far. Simone Inzaghi’s men took the lead thanks to Lautaro Martinez’s opener, but Ruslan Malinovskiy and Rafel Toloi turned it around before Edin Dzeko’s equaliser. However, the game could’ve shifted either way, as Federico Di Marco missed a penalty, while Roberto Piccoli’s goal was ruled out by VAR.
Despite failing to win, the game once again showcased Inter’s impressive form at the start of the season, so the Nerazzurri will be looking to continue that when they visit Sassuolo on Saturday. La Beneamata are undefeated in their last five meetings with the Neroverdi and have won on their last two visits to the Mapei Stadium, thrashing the hosts 3-0 at their own venue last term.
Simone Inzaghi might be tempted to do some rotating against a struggling Sassuolo side, as Inter travel to Ukraine for their Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk midweek. Arturo Vidal, Stefano Sensi, Gabriel Brazao and Christian Eriksen are all unavailable, while Joaquin Correa remains a doubt after picking up a knock in the 3-1 win over Fiorentina. Alexis Sanchez might get a rare start next to Edin Dzeko, despite rumours continuing to link him with a move away from the club.
Sassuolo, meanwhile, have struggled since the start of the season under new coach Alessio Dionisi. The Neroverdi lost key figures like last year’s top scorer Francesco Caputo and midfield general Manuel Locatelli, so their bumpy start was easy to predict.
Dionisi started off strongly with a 3-2 win away to Hellas Verona, but failed to win any of their next four games before beating Salernitana last week. Sassuolo suffered three consecutive defeats to Roma, Torino and Atalanta before earning a rather unimpressive but crucial 1-0 win over the new boys.
Domenico Berardi scored the only goal and it seems that the Italy international will be the main figure in attack this term, as Giacomo Raspadori is yet to prove his goalscoring abilities on a consistent basis. Despite this, Raspadori is expected to keep his place in attack, while Berardi should play behind him alongside Filip Djuricic and Jeremy Boga.
It’s a bit surprising to see Sassuolo scoring just five goals since the start of the season given all of their attacking talent. The Neroverdi will have a full week to prepare for the game against Inter, but their struggles in front of goal might continue as they are about to face one of the best defences in the league.
Considering all of the above, it’s no surprise that Inter are 3/4 favourites with William Hill to get their third away victory of the season on Saturday. The draw is available at 3/1, while what would be Sassuolo’s first win over Inter since 2018 is available at 10/3.
One to watch for Sassuolo: Domenico Berardi has three goals in his last five outings against Inter. The Sassuolo captain has two Serie A goals to his name this term and is 17/2 to break the deadlock against the Nerazzurri on Saturday.
One to watch for Inter: Lautaro Martinez has had a stellar start of the season after scoring four goals in his first six Serie A appearances. The Argentinian already has three goals against Sassuolo in his career and is 9/2 to score the opener against the Neroverdi this weekend.
Long shot: Two of Inter’s last three away games have ended in 3-1 victories for the Nerazzurri. A repeat of that result on Saturday is available at 12/1 with William Hil, while it rises to 70/1 if you pair it with Martinez to score the opener.
