Scotland vs. Czech Republic Tips, Preview and Predictions

A tough group for both Scotland and the Czech Republic sees the two countries begin their quest to reach the knockout stages of Euro 2020 at Hampden Park on Monday. England and Croatia are the other two teams in Group D, so you feel neither the Scots or the Czechs can afford to lose this game.

Where and when: Hampden Park – 14 June, kick-off 14:00

Last time: Ryan Fraser was on target in the opening exchanges as Scotland beat the Czech Republic 1-0 at Hampden Park in the Nations League last October.

Scotland v Czech Republic Predictions and Preview

Scotland have beaten the Czech Republic three times in the last five years, so the Tartan Army will be confident of their side converting home advantage in this Euro 2020 opener to secure a vital victory. A loss for either side on Monday would make it incredibly tough to qualify for the round of 16.

The Scots beat the Czech Republic home and away in last year’s Nations League, also recording a 2-1 comeback victory in Olomouc. Ryan Christie scored the winner from the penalty spot in that game, and the Celtic man will join the likes of Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and Aston Villa’s John McGinn in a strong Scottish midfield.

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour is a slight doubt for the game with a knock, while the Scots are also hoping John Fleck’s positive Covid-19 test doesn’t lead to further cases on the eve of their first major tournament since France 98.

The Czech Republic, meanwhile, have failed to qualify for the last three World Cups, and exited the last Euros at the group stage. They’ve reached the quarter-finals and the semi-finals since finishing as runners-up at Euro 96, but the current Czech squad is low on quality.

West Ham United’s Tomas Soucek will hope to have as good a tournament as he has had Premier League season, while Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick will need to be sharp in front of goal.

The Czechs will be looking to prove their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Italy in preparation for this game wasn’t a sign of things to come, but that was their seventh defeat in their last 16 matches. That sequence includes their two losses against Scotland.

Steve Clarke’s side, on the other hand, are unbeaten in five coming into the Euros, and were unfortunate not to beat the Netherlands when drawing 2-2 with the Oranje in a warm-up friendly last week.

The Scots have only lost two of their last 16 fixtures, yet they are the slight underdogs in these Scotland v Czech Republic predictions at 2/1 with William Hill. The Czechs are 35/19 for the win, while you can back the draw on Monday afternoon at 39/19

One to watch for Scotland: Che Adams scored his second goal in four international appearances when netting the winner against Lithuania in Scotland’s second warm-up friendly for Euro 2020. The Southampton forward is 7/1 to open the scoring in this game.

One to watch for Czech Republic: Patrik Schick has managed 11 goals in 26 appearances for the Czech Republic. He is 33/5 to break the deadlock in these Scotland v Czech Republic tips.

Long shot: This is a game neither side can afford to lose, so there’s a strong possibility it results in a tight and cagey affair. Scotland have beaten the Czech Republic 1-0 twice in the last five years, and they are 7/1 to repeat the trick again here. With Adams getting the goal, those odds rise to 63/1
