Senegal v Algeria Predictions and Preview

Senegal needed extra-time to get the better of Tunisia in the last four but are fully deserving of their place in Friday’s showpiece event. The Lions of Teranga have been outstanding defensively, keeping five clean sheets from six matches, conceding just once.

The solitary effort was of course against Algeria in the group-stage and The Greens will feel particularly confident of reproducing a similar outcome.

Senegal’s long quest for silverware suffered a blow in the semi-final after star defender Kalidou Koulibaly picked up a second caution from his last three games. The defender has been fundamental to the finalists magnificent rearguard and it cannot be underestimated how much Senegal will miss their towering centre-half.

On a more positive note, Sadio Mane will feature and the Liverpool ace has predictably enjoyed a good tournament. Mane has three goals to his name and is still in the running for the golden boot. The Reds’ forward is the 4/1 favourite to open proceedings and give the Lions of Teranga the perfect start.

Rivals Algeria advanced in dramatic fashion. The Greens appeared on course for a further 30 minutes of action before skipper Riyad Mahrez hit a stunning 95th minute winner. The Manchester City winger sent the crowd in to raptures and is 3/1 to register anytime. Meanwhile, Slimani is 11/4 in the same market and Baghdad Bounedjah is 6/1 to net last.

The competing squads are both backed at 5/6 to lift the trophy, further highlighting how closely matched the nations are.

One to watch for Senegal: Mbaye Niang has flattered to deceive and Ismaïla Sarr could be the main beneficiary of his club team-mate’s struggles through on goal. Sarr is 15/4 to bag anytime.

One to watch for Algeria: Only Odion Ighalo has scored more goals than Adam Ounas and the Napoli talent will be unlucky not to start from the opening whistle. The young wideman is a highly attractive 10/1 to notch the final effort of the showdown.

Long shot: It has been witnessed at club level, when Koulibaly has been absent for Napoli, the Partenopei are simply a different outfit defensively. Coupled with Algeria’s strength in the goalscoring department, both on the pitch and in reserve, and it could be too much for The Lions of Teranga to handle. A 3-1 triumph for The Greens is 33/1.
