Serie A tips of the week: Don’t underestimate Lecce in Rome

Roma vs. Lecce, Serie A

Football Italia Editor Susy Campanale takes you through the best Serie A bets of the week…

It remains one of the most open and exciting Serie A seasons in a decade, as Lazio leapfrogged Inter to become the most likely genuine title challengers to Juventus. This week, European commitments add to the confusion, giving some teams a distinct advantage that we should take note of when placing bets.

For example, Roma are already thin on options even before playing the Europa League with KAA Gent on Thursday, while Champions League surprise outfit Atalanta must balance euphoria and fatigue after a 4-1 victory over Valencia. Cristiano Ronaldo won’t snub the opportunity to set yet another record in his glittering career.

Lecce undervalued

Roma vs. Lecce – Sunday February 23, Stadio Olimpico, Kick-off: 5.00pm

Looking at recent form, team news and the fact Roma will be playing in the Europa League on Thursday night, it’s frankly inexplicable that Lecce are 8/1 for a victory at the Stadio Olimpico. Fabio Liverani’s side are in great shape, have a far better away record than at home, are coming off three consecutive victories, including a 3-2 at Napoli, and play just the kind of football that causes real problems for Paulo Fonseca.

Roma have one point from four rounds, are feeling the pinch from the on-going injury crisis and will be stretched very thin indeed by their Europa League commitments. It might not be the odds-on favourite result, but there’s no way Lecce should be 8/1 for a victory here.

Best bet for Roma vs. Lecce: Lecce to beat Roma 8/1 with Bet Victor

Always goals with Atalanta

Atalanta vs. Sassuolo – Sunday February 23, Gewiss Stadium, Kick-off: 2.00pm

Watch live on Premier Sports/Streaming

Atalanta are taking their spectacular brand of football to the Champions League with a midweek 4-1 victory over Valencia, their first foray into the Round of 16. The main focus must remain qualifying for the tournament again and they’ve got a six-point advantage over Roma following last week’s head-to-head.

It’s a balancing act between fatigue and euphoria for Gian Piero Gasperini, all of which points to goals. Sassuolo play a not dissimilar style to Atalanta, all quick passes, press and turnover, and are eager to make up for last week’s freakish home defeat to Parma. We could go out on a limb for Over 4.5 Goals.

Best bet for Atalanta vs. Sassuolo: Over 4.5 Goals 85/40 with Bet Victor

Ronaldo record

SPAL vs. Juventus – Saturday February 22, Allianz Juventus Stadium, Kick-off: 5.00pm

Watch live on Premier Sports/Streaming

Cristiano Ronaldo keeps going strong at 35 because he is an inveterate record collector and looks set for another prize addition this weekend. He has found the net in each of his last 10 Serie A games, so is just one shy of the all-time league record of 11 set by Gabriel Batistuta at Fiorentina and Fabio Quagliarella with Sampdoria. He’s not going to let that opportunity slip against the rock bottom team in the division.

CR7 was rested last week, so with Gonzalo Higuain not at 100 per cent, it’s safe to assume he’ll be back and see this as a warm-up exercise for the Champions League and Olympique Lyonnais. Considering SPAL’s tendency to give away cheap penalties, you could even make it more specific and tip Ronaldo to score a spot-kick at 16/5 with 888 Sport.

Best bet for SPAL vs. Juventus: Cristiano Ronaldo to score anytime at 8/11 with 888 Sport
