Serie A tips of the week: Milan rule the derby, Atalanta excite in Naples

Inter and Milan club crests ahead of their Serie A fixture

Football Italia’s Susy Campanale takes you through the best Serie A bets of the week…

For more than 20 years, Susy Campanale has been at the forefront of Italian football coverage for Football Italia. With a unique level of experience and expertise covering Serie A, Susy casts an expert eye across the latest round of action, exclusively with Eurotips.

We return after the break for international duty and what a special weekend of fixtures we have to dive back into Serie A action. Saturday alone is action-packed, ranging from Atalanta trying to maintain their perfect start against a wounded Napoli to the ever-intriguing Derby della Madonnina, through Lazio visiting Sampdoria and Juventus missing several key players due to COVID-19 in Crotone.

We have plenty of avenues to explore for betting opportunities and that includes looking at the less glamorous games on paper, such as Bologna-Sassuolo and Genoa recovering from their Coronavirus outbreak in Verona.

Milan to break Derby taboo

Inter vs. Milan – Saturday October 17, Stadio Meazza, Kick-off: 5.00pm

Watch live on Premier Sports/Streaming

If ever there was a sign of how much Milan have fallen in recent years, it’s the fact they have lost each of the last four derbies in Serie A. Inter started this season as Scudetto contenders after investing heavily, but various factors this weekend point to a Rossoneri resurgence. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back after his bout with COVID-19, but the Nerazzurri are still in the thick of their outbreak, missing Ashley Young, Roberto Gagliardini, Alessandro Bastoni, Milan Skriniar and Radja Nainggolan, with Stefano Sensi also suspended. Milan won their first three games without conceding and will rarely get a better chance to end that taboo.

Best bet for Inter vs. Milan: Milan to win at 21/10 on 888 Sport

Atalanta elevated in Naples

Napoli vs. Atalanta – Saturday October 17, Stadio San Paolo, Kick-off 2.00pm

Watch live on Premier Sports/Streaming

If all goes to plan, this ought to be one of the most entertaining games of the weekend in any European league. Atalanta can send a signal by winning their opening four matches that they are genuinely one of the big boys now, while Napoli will be fuming after the cancelled Juventus trip debacle and docked point. The upshot of that is they’ve spent the last couple of weeks in quarantine, which could prove to be a valuable training retreat for Gennaro Gattuso to implement the 4-2-3-1 formation. Also, and this sets them very much apart from Atalanta, none of their players went on international duty.

It is for those reasons I don’t feel entirely comfortable tipping an Atalanta victory, but I do expect these two sides to go at it hammer and tongs for an open, exhilarating encounter.

Best bet for Napoli vs. Atalanta: Over 3.5 Goals at 21/10 on William Hill

Emilia-Romagna Derby delight

Bologna vs. Sassuolo – Sunday October 18, Stadio Dall’Ara, Kick-off: 11.30am

Watch live on Premier Sports/Streaming

We’ve mentioned before that Bologna have a famously leaky defence and that hasn’t changed, as they conceded in each of their last 36 Serie A rounds. That’s quite an achievement. Put them up against a Sassuolo side that play quick passing football and attack constantly, it should be a recipe for goals.

The same was said about Benevento vs. Bologna before the break for international duty, yet that somehow ended only 1-0 for the hosts, largely due to some shocking finishing. That’s a risk again, but less so with Ciccio Caputo leading the Neroverdi attack.

Best bet for Bologna vs. Sassuolo: Over 3.5 Goals at 7/5 on Bet Victor
