Serie A tips of the week: Stick with Spezia and check Cagliari XI

Cagliari and Inter club crests

Football Italia’s Susy Campanale takes you through the best Serie A bets of the week…

For more than 20 years, Susy Campanale has been at the forefront of Italian football coverage for Football Italia. With a unique level of experience and expertise covering Serie A, Susy casts an expert eye across the latest round of action, exclusively with Eurotips.

I keep telling you to check the team news going into a weekend of Serie A action, but last week, I should’ve added look up the weather report too. Torrential rain destroyed the usual course of several games and forced Udinese vs. Atalanta to be called off entirely. The situation should be calmer this time, and the final European fixtures for 2020 have been completed, so the focus is all on domestic affairs. That’s more true than anyone for Inter, who have nothing else to think about all season save for the Scudetto following their Champions League failure.

Spezia might play better than the results they actually achieve, but I won’t stop tipping them for greatness. Think of them as this year’s Hellas Verona. The old team news adage stands true, so Cagliari have their big players back and that changes their whole style. Atalanta are transformed too, but this is by choice as a response to heavy defeats, so ignore their reputation and look at recent form. There’s one game I don’t feel comfortable calling and that’s Lazio vs. Verona. They could just as easily neutralise each other as engage in a goalfest, it all depends on who – if anyone – breaks the deadlock early.

I still love Spezia

Crotone vs. Spezia – Saturday December 12, Stadio Scida, Kick-off: 2.00pm

Watch live on Premier Sports/Streaming

Spezia haven’t quite lived up to my tips lately, at least not in terms of the results, but the performances have been excellent. They were horribly unlucky to lose narrowly with Lazio and I will continue to tip them for great things this season. Both these sides were promoted from Serie B over the summer, but they are definitely not on the same level now. Home advantage is even more irrelevant behind closed doors and Spezia are simply a better team, in better form.

Best bet for Crotone vs. Spezia: Spezia to win at 17/10 on Bet Victor

Cagliari shake off COVID

Cagliari vs. Inter – Sunday December 13, Sardegna Arena, Kick-off: 11.30am

Watch live on Premier Sports/Streaming

Cagliari are getting over their COVID outbreak, which means Giovanni Simeone, Nahitan Nandez and Gaston Pereiro are back, possibly even Adam Ounas and Diego Godin. Inter are in turmoil after flopping out of the Champions League with a whimper and coach Antonio Conte will know all his eggs are now in the Scudetto basket. Add in the lunchtime kick-off and this suggests goals to me, plenty of them.

Best bet for Cagliari vs. Inter: Over 3.5 Goals at 21/20 with William Hill

Atalanta rarity

Atalanta vs. Fiorentina – Sunday December 13, Gewiss Stadium, Kick-off: 2.00pm

Watch live on Premier Sports/Streaming

In recent years, Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta have become known for anything other than clean sheets, but his team is continuing to evolve. The 1-0 victory at Ajax midweek showcased their newfound defensive solidity now that the focus has been re-routed from all-out attack to some kind of balance. In turn, Fiorentina are one of the worst teams in Serie A at the moment and look like they couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo.

Best bet for Atalanta vs. Fiorentina: No to Both Teams to Score at 7/5 with 888 Sport
