Stade Brestois v Marseille Predictions and Preview

The hosts finished in 14th place last term and will be aiming for a similar finish next May. Les Pirates rely on a sound rearguard and Irvin Cardona to get the goals. The French forward started his career at Monaco, before guiding Cercle Brugge to the Belgian Second Division title.

The 23-year-old moved to Brest in August 2019 and has been a big hit. Cardona offers great versatility and can play anywhere across the forward line and Olivier Dall’Oglio will hope the hotshot sticks around with Fiorentina a firm admirer.

The Italian outfit have yet to submit a bid but €5m is reportedly the magic number. Cardona is 5/1 to open proceedings and Les Pirates are 13/5 to claim all three points. Visitors Marseille will be without Jordan Amavi, Maxime Lopez, Valentin Rongier, World Cup winner Steve Mandanda and star player Dimitri Payet.

Payet, in particular is a huge loss for the Olympians who have endured a long wait to get on the pitch. The former West Ham playmaker will be replaced by Morgan Sanson but it will be Florian Thauvin who will be tasked with supporting Dario Benedetto.

Thauvin never really settled at Newcastle United but is adored by the natives and has well over a half century of goals for Marseille. The vice-captain is 13/8 to net anytime, while Benedetto is 7/2 to break the deadlock. The Argentine is vying with Kostas Mitroglu for the striker’s jersey but the Greek international recently picked up an injury in training and is a doubt for the weekend encounter.

Mitroglu is back at the club after a year on loan and if he is moved on again before the window closes the Olympians are reportedly keen on bringing in Alfredo Morelos. The Rangers maverick saw a move to Ligue 1 outfit Lille fall through and has since struggled for focus. Marseille are 21/20 to emerge triumphant and the draw is 12/5.

One to watch for Brest: New recruit Heriberto Tavares has a fine record at under-21 level with Portugal and will hope to translate his exploits on to the domestic scene. The winger is 6/1 to notch last.

One to watch for Marseille: Radonjić is a tricky wideman and will operate on one flank with Thauvin on the other. The Serbian has impressed in pre-season and is 11/2 to register anytime.

Long shot: Marseille face fierce competition from an inspired Lyon after their European heroics, while Lille, Nice and Monaco will all be in the mix for a top three place. The Olympians will want to ensure their participation in this year’s Champions League is not a one off and it is vital they get off to a good start domestically. A 3-0 success is 7/1.
