European champions Italy face a tough test on what they hope will be a record-breaking occasion, when they visit Switzerland in World Cup qualification. The Azzurri could have the opportunity to claim the international record for games unbeaten, but the Rossocrociati will be out to stop their Alpine neighbours either way.

Switzerland v Italy Predictions and Preview

Italy were a cut above Switzerland when the countries met in June, as the Azzurri cantered through the European Championship group stage by winning all three games without conceding a goal. Indeed, Roberto Mancini’s side were a cut above the rest of the continent, even if they needed two penalty shootouts in the semi-finals and final against Spain and England.

Switzerland also experienced the thrill of a spot-kick victory at the Euros, as the Rossocrociati knocked out world champions France in the round of 16. The Swiss would soon experience the bitter taste of a shootout defeat against the Spanish in the quarter-finals though, showing they’re a tough team to play against despite the heartbreak.

New manager Murat Yakin has been hit by an injury crisis, with Lyon’s Xherdan Shaqiri pulling out along with Loris Benito, Breel Embolo and Mario Gavranovic. Captain Granit Xhaka set to win his 100th cap this week, though, while Ricardo Rodriguez, Haris Seferovic and goalkeeper Yann Sommer are all well-established internationals.

The coach himself, though, is inexperienced at the highest level, and he comes up against a master tactician in the form of Mancini. The Azzurri boss is one of the most decorated in international football, with the summer’s Euro 2020 triumph adding to club successes with Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Mancini is still without the injured Leonardo Spinazzola, but his Euro-winning squad remains largely intact over this international window. Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma will hope for some minutes after a quiet start to his Paris Saint-Germain career, behind veteran centre-backs Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

Further up the pitch, Marco Verratti and Ballon d’Or contender Jorginho will dictate this game from midfielder, pulling the strings and creating opportunities for the likes of Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Chiesa to work with. Moise Kean has been recalled following his return to Juventus, and will also hope for some minutes here.

The visitors are the 11/10 favourites in these Switzerland v Italy predictions, as they bid to etch their names ever deeper into the history books. The home team are 3/1 for the upset, which wouldn’t constitute a massive shock at those odds and considering their summer showing. The draw, meanwhile, is priced at 12/5.

One to watch for Switzerland: Granit Xhaka is in line to win his 100th cap this week. That’s sure to be a momentous occasion for the Swiss captain, who will hope to keep a lid on his emotions in this Switzerland v Italy preview following his rash red card that led to Arsenal’s capitulation against Man City last weekend.

One to watch for Italy: Federico Chiesa looks set to take on a bigger role in the Juventus attack following Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Manchester United. The 23-year-old will hope to improve his output for both club and country, having only netted three goals in his first 32 international appearances.

Long shot: The Azzurri were in a different class to Switzerland over the summer. The Rossocrociati haven’t had much time to make many adjustments ahead of these Switzerland v Italy tips. They may have home advantage this time round, but another 3-0 victory for the Italians can’t be ruled out at 19/1
