Torino vs. Juventus, Serie A

Serie A leaders Juventus are faced with a Turin derby this weekend as they make the short trip to the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino to face neighbours Torino on Saturday evening. Il Toro claimed a point against the Old Lady the last times the teams met, but Walter Mazzarri’s side are up against it here.

Last time: Torino took the lead through Sasa Lukic when the teams faced each other at the Allianz Stadium, before Cristiano Ronaldo scored the hosts’ equaliser five minutes from time.

Torino v Juventus Predictions and Preview

That most recent meeting in May came after Juventus had wrapped up the Serie A title, as the Old Lady wound down and failed to win any of their last five fixtures. Things are much different this time round, with Maurizio Sarri’s side facing a stern challenge from Inter Milan as they bid to win their ninth successive scudetto.

Ronaldo may have said in the week that he’d rather not play the lesser games and concentrate on big Champions League matches for the Bianconeri, as well as the more important fixtures for his native Portugal. The 34-year-old perhaps owes his employers and the Juve supporters a performance here after those comments, and that could make the Bianconeri’s top scorer even more dangerous this weekend.

With Gonzalo Higuain a doubt and influential defender Giorgio Chiellini ruled out with a cruciate knee ligament injury, there’s a little more pressure on Ronaldo to perform. Irrespective of that, there’s more than enough quality in the Juve lineup to see of their local rivals here.

The champions may have dropped points in their 1-1 draw away to Lecce last weekend, but that’s the only time they’ve failed to win on their last nine outings in all competitions. The Old Lady are yet to lose any of their 13 fixtures so far this term, winning eight of their 10 games in Serie A. They are the clear favourites to make it nine from 11 on Saturday evening, priced at 4/7 for the win.

Torino meanwhile are available at 6/1, with the draw at 3/1. The Granata are without a win in their last five games, losing four of those – including a heavy 4-0 defeat at Lazio in midweek. Nicolas N’Koulou was sent off for two bookable offences in that game, meaning he misses out here. Mazzarri also expects to be without Alessandro Buongiorno and Vittorio Parigini.

It’s tough to see anything other than a Juventus victory here, with the Old Lady winning four games to nil in a row against Torino prior to their most recent meeting. The Bianconeri are unbeaten in their last 10 against Il Toro, winning eight. The away team are looking strong for another win to nil on Saturday, with that bet priced at 6/4.

One to watch for Torino: Andrea Belotti has started the season in solid goalscoring form, finding the back of the net five times in Torino’s opening 10 matches. The Italian failed to score a Serie A goal in September, but he’s 10/1 to end his drought by opening the scoring this weekend.

One to watch for Juventus: A local derby ought to be enough to motivate Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese has scored five times in eight Serie A appearances so far this term, including a 96th-minute winner from the penalty spot against Genoa on Wednesday, and he is the 11/4 favourite to break the deadlock here.

Long shot: Juve have won 1-0 on their last two trips to the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, and the Old Lady are 5/1 to repeat the trick on Saturday. If you add Ronaldo to that bet as the game’s only goalscorer, the odds increase to 13/1.
