Valencia v Atletico Madrid Predictions and Preview

Atletico Madrid will be eager to bounce back from their 2-0 Champions League defeat away to Liverpool on Sunday when they travel to Valencia. Diego Simeone’s men earned an impressive 3-0 win over Real Betis last weekend, but they were completely outclassed by the Reds on Wednesday evening.

Facing Valencia seems like a good thing for the Capital side now, as Atletico are undefeated in their last 13 meetings with Valencia in all competitions. Los Colchoneros won both of their clashes with the Bats last term, after 1-0 victory away from home, before beating them 3-1 in Madrid.

Felipe received a rather harsh red card against Liverpool, but he’ll be available and should start on Sunday, but Thomas Lemar and Marcos Llorente remain sidelined. Antoinne Griezman was suspended and didn’t feature against the English side, so he should start up front alongside Luis Suarez.

Simeone has been struggling to find the right balance in his attempts to make his side more offensive-minded. The one over Betis was the only one in Atletico’s last five games. The Capital side has been uncharacteristically leaky at the back and has kept only two clean sheets in their last nine games.

Valencia, meanwhile, earned a crucial 2-0 victory over Villareal last time, which ended a streak of seven consecutive games without a win. Jose Bordalas’ men will be looking to build some momentum when they host Atletico and the 57-year-old has his full squad available, which is also a boast. However, facing an angry Atletico Madrid, who currently sits third in the La Liga standings, might be too much for 10th placed Valencia.

A victory for the hosts would definitely be an upset and can be backed up at 10/3. The draw can’t be written off and is available at 9/4, while an Atletico Madrid victory is priced at 19/20.

One to watch for Valencia: Carlos Soler scored his sixth goal for club and country since the start of the season in the 2-0 win over VIllareal. The 24-year-old has been one of the few bright spots for Valencia this term and is 11/1 to break the deadlock against Atletico.

One to watch for Atletico Madrid: Luis Suarez might be 34, but he has barely shown any signs of slowing down, after scoring six La Liga goals since the start of the season. The Uruguayan has scored 13 goals in 15 games against Valencia in his career, which justifies the 4/1 odds to score the opener at Mestalla on Sunday.

Long shot: Atletico Madrid won three of their five La Liga away games this term by 2-1. A repeat of that result on Sunday is available at 17/2 in these Valencia v Atletico Madrid tips, rising to 46/1 if you add Suarez as the first scorer.
