Last time: Matteo Pessina reduced the arrears after efforts from Jordan Veretout and Edin Dzeko but it wasn’t enough to salvage a point for the Yellow and Blues.

Verona v Roma Predictions and Preview

Ivan Juric will have been thrilled with how the 2019-20 campaign unfolded. Verona were expected to be in a relegation battle but survived with ease and even flirted with a European spot. The Yellow and Blues were particularly strong defensively, but will have to do without highly regarded stoppers Marash Kumbulla and Amir Rrahmani.

The former is close to sealing a switch to this weekend’s opponents for a fee in excess of €25m, while Rrahmani has linked up with Napoli. Juric has bolstered the ranks with the arrivals of Adrien Tameze, Kevin Ruegg, Mert Cetin and Marco Benassi but remains in the market for further additions.

Gaston Ramirez spurned Verona’s advances but there is hope Matteo Pessina can be brought back to the club. The Atalanta owned midfielder struck on seven occasions and is available for a very modest €5m.

Samuel Di Carmine will lead the line and is 13/2 to break the deadlock. The spearhead averaged one in three last year and there is added responsibility on the Italian after Fabio Borini and Giampaolo Pazzini’s departures. The Yellow and Blues are 13/5 to claim the spoils and a stalemate is 5/2.

Roma are also much changed with key defenders Aleksandar Kolarov, Chris Smalling, Alessandro Florenzi all elsewhere. Paulo Fonseca is watching on nervously as Juventus decide between Luis Suarez and Edin Dzeko and the belief is the Bosnian is the preferred choice of Andrea Pirlo.

In the meantime, the Giallorossi talisman will feature for his current employers and is 15/4 to open proceedings. The former Manchester City attacker has over a century of goals for Roma, and, while he has not agitated for a move, would not turn down the chance to play for a team in the running for major honours both domestically and on the continent. The travelling party are 21/20 to emerge triumphant.

One to watch for Verona: Only Di Carmine and Pessina netted more than Marco Faraoni in 2019-20. The marauding full-back loves to get forward and is an attractive 11/1 to bag first.

One to watch for Roma: Jordan Veretout will play in a more advanced role in the absence of Nicolo Zaniolo and is also on penalty duty. The former Fiorentina ace is 10/1 to notch last.

Long shot: Kumbulla, Rrahmani, Pessina and, perhaps the standout performer in the ranks, Sofyan Ambrabat are all huge losses for Juric, but the biggest cause for concern for the Croatian is at the top end of the pitch. Mariusz Stepinski is the backup to Di Carmine and managed three goals all season, and unless Verona bring in at least one more striker, the Yellow and Blues will almost certainly be in the bottom-half of the table for the duration. In the opposing camp, Fonseca is well aware of the expectation and a strong start is imperative. A 3-0 success for Roma is 25/1.
