Villarreal v Huesca Predictions and Preview

Huesca only spent a single season back in La Liga 2 before securing promotion back to the top tier as champions. The Aragonese outfit are now entering just their second campaign in the Primera Division, and looking to make their mark early on with this trip to Villarreal.

Los Azulgranas got two points against the Yellow Submarine in their other foray into the top flight in 2018/19, securing a 2-2 draw at El Alcoraz before that 1-1 in the return. Both clubs won their home games against the other when they clashed in the Copa del Rey in 2015, while the only other meetings between the clubs came in the Segunda back in 2012/13.

Huesca have had a decent enough pre-season, with their warm-up fixtures starting just a month after the final game of their La Liga 2 campaign, where they won the league by a single point from Cadiz. Coach Michel hasn’t had much cash to splash in the transfer market, and has mainly strengthened at the back in signing a goalkeeper and a number of defensive reinforcements.

Villarreal coach Unai Emery, meanwhile, has brought in former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin, along with goalkeeper Gero Rulli and Dani Parejo on a free transfer from Valencia, which could prove to be an excellent signing. The Yellow Submarine will also hope 19-year-old Japanese winger Takefusa Kubo swims rather than sinks during his loan spell from Real Madrid.

Huesca may have a solid record against Villarreal, but the Valencians are the clear favourites – despite losing three of their five pre-season friendlies. The hosts are looking to build on their fifth-placed finish last season with another strong campaign this time round, and are 8/13 to kick things off with a win in their opening fixture. Huesca are available at 26/5 for the upset, while you can back the draw on Sunday at 31/10

One to watch for Villarreal: Gerard Moreno was Villarreal’s top scorer last season with 20 goals in all competitions, 18 of them coming from 35 matches in La Liga. He’s among the favourites to open the scoring in this match.

One to watch for Huesca: Shinji Okazaki top scored for Huesca in his first season for the club last term, netting 12 goals in 36 La Liga 2 appearances. The Premier League winner with Leicester City is 34 now, but needs to hit the ground running in the top flight this season.

Long shot: With no supporters inside the Estadio de la Ceramica this weekend and their tails up following their Segunda title success, Huesca will hope to sneak a result and are 17/1 to get another 2-2 draw against Villarreal.
