Villarreal v Real Madrid Predictions and Preview

It’s difficult to predict how this game will pan out, considering what rests on Saturday’s outcome and what’s on the horizon for Real Madrid. Villarreal meanwhile are looking to sew up a fifth-placed finish.

The Yellow Submarine are ahead of Real Betis on their head-to-head record, and a win would guarantee they match their final position from last season. As long as they equal or better Betis’s result, Javier Calleja’s side can look forward to fifth place, although European football is definitely on the cards whatever happens at the weekend.

Villarreal are 39/25 for the win, while Real Madrid are 8/5. The bookmakers have the two teams priced very similarly, which is in part because of the fact the visitors’ eye may be on another prize. With Cristiano Ronaldo and Dani Carvahal recovering from injuries, Zinedine Zidane is expected to ring the changes ahead of the European showpiece on 26 May.

Their opponents in Kiev, Liverpool, have an extra week to prepare for the final, and that could come into Zidane’s thinking. He can’t afford any injuries to key personnel, but could name players such as Gareth Bale, Isco and Marco Asensio, who are all competing with each other for a place in the line-up next weekend.

In the event that Real treat this game as something of a training session, the draw could come into play. Four of the last 10 meetings between the sides have ended with honours even, and a repeat of that is 16/5 in this one.

However, Real still have a chance of finishing second in the league behind their city rivals Atletico  Madrid. They do need Diego Simeone’s side to lose at home to Eibar, but Zidane will want to put the pressure on with three points ahead of Atleti’s game on Sunday. There could be goals galore in this game, with an over 4.5 goals bet priced at 38/25.

One to watch for Villarreal: Carlos Bacca has 18 goals for the Yellow Submarine so far this season, and will be keen to add to his tally as he looks to make his stay at the club permanent. He’s 11/2 to score first.

One to watch for Real Madrid: Gareth Bale will be desperate to put in a big performance as he looks for a place in the starting XI next weekend. He’s 9/2 for the first goal on Saturday night.

Long shot: After that impressive win at the Bernabeu, Villarreal are looking for their first La Liga double over Real Madrid. They are 25/1 to get it with a second successive 1-0 victory over Los Blancos.
