Weekend football betting tips for March 16-17

Milan vs. Inter – San Siro – Sunday 17 March, kick-off 19:30

One of the best matches of the weekend comes from Serie A, where local rivals and San Siro co-inhabitants AC Milan and Inter Milan square off. There’s a lot more than bragging rights up for grabs though, as there’s only one point between the teams as they both seek Champions League football next term.

It’s Milan who hold the slender advantage over their rivals coming into this game, and they are the 7/5 favourites in the football betting this weekend. Inter currently lie fourth in the table, with Roma lurking in fifth and ready to close the gap on these two this weekend. The capital club could be level on points with the Nerazzurri by the time this Milan derby kicks off.

That’s only going to add some extra spice to proceedings, as Milan look to avenge their 1-0 defeat from this season’s reverse fixture in October. Mauro Icardi’s 92nd-minute strike sent the majority of the San Siro into raptures on that occasion, but Inter look set to be without their talismanic forward after a strange few weeks that’s seen the Argentine stripped of the captaincy, linked with a move away from the club, and accused of faking an injury.

That won’t help Luciano Spalletti’s side on Sunday, and we’re backing Milan to pick up a big win. Eight of the last 12 Milan derbies have failed to see both teams score, while the Rossoneri have only conceded three times in their last 10 matches, keeping seven clean sheets. With that in mind, Milan are 38/11 to win this game to nil.

Bayern Munich vs. Mainz – Allianz Arena – Sunday 17 March, kick-off 17:00

On to Germany, and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich continue their title defence with a home game against Mainz. Niko Kovac’s side are looking for their sixth successive league win on Sunday, a run that’s seen them overhaul Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table.

Die Roten lead their title rivals on goal difference ahead of this week’s action, following their 6-0 thrashing of Wolfsburg on Saturday. It’s some turnaround for the Bavarians, who are looking to win an incredible seventh straight Bundesliga crown this year. That seemed highly unlikely after they went through a dreadful run earlier in the campaign, winning just two of eight matches between September and November.

The turnaround in form has saved Kovac’s job in his first season at the helm, but the FCB boss isn’t helped by a tough Champions League tie with Liverpool in midweek. Qualifying for the quarter-finals could prove the perfect antidote for any tired legs though. This weekend is another crucial game for Bayern, and they’re heavy favourites to get the win at 1/7.

Bayern have won 11 of their last 13 meetings with Mainz, losing just once. Ten of those 13 games have seen over 2.5 goals, so adding that to the home win looks tempting at 4/9. If you’re after higher odds though, you can get evens on Bayern to win and over 3.5 goals, which has happened five times in those 13 most recent matches.
