The case of Leroy Sane is certainly a curious one. Widely tipped for greatness after impressing in his debut season for Manchester City, the story has soured a little and now the talented 23-year-old is being linked with a move away from the Etihad. Which begs the question; what are the best odds on Sane joining Bayern Munich?
The Bundesliga champions appear to be the only team in the hunt for the pacy winger. Not put off by the fact that Sane was left out of the Germany squad for last summer’s World Cup, Bayern have identified the former Schalke player as one of the men they want to replace the outgoing double act of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.
Those two have patrolled the flanks at the Allianz Arena for many a year, but their time is now up. Die Roten have been linked with an array of stars such as Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, but it appears Sane is the one they really want. Gifted with a silky touch, searing speed and an agility gifted to him through his ballerina mother, Sane has all the tools to fill the Bavarian void.
However, Manchester City are no selling club. They can resist any form of offer for their player, but with just two years remaining on his contract, the increasingly savvy Premier League champions may decide to cash in on a player who commands a current value in the region of £100m. City have failed to convince Sane to sign a new deal as yet, and this could play a part in their decision making.
What’s more, Pep Guardiola has come out and said that he won’t stand in the way of any unhappy player who wants out of the blue half of Manchester. ‘We want people happy to be here,’ the City boss said. ‘The desire to have him to be with us is always there. I spoke to the club 10 times (to say) that I want people here to be happy, if they don’t want, they go.’
While clearly wanting Sane to stay, Guardiola also spells out that he won’t stand in his way if he wants out. Borne from a position of strength, Guardiola wants a steady ship as he eyes further domination at home and in Europe, and knows he has huge amounts of quality in his squad when it comes to the forward positions.
With all that in mind, the onus is on Sane whether he wants to force through a move or not. The player hasn’t spoken publicly on the matter, but he is 11/4 to join Bayern in this summer transfer window. Paris Saint-Germain are credited with a 16/1 interest as they look for potential replacements for Neymar, while Sane is 4/11 to stay at City.
